Over the past two years, I started experimenting with the art of quilling . Although most quilling is a two dimensional art, I quickly began to experiment with quilling 3D pieces. I was commissioned to do an art show with 1920's flapper hats for a production of The Great Gatsby. This experience was either going to be the beginning of the end of my quilling career. Quilling is a slow process that is extremely involved and time consuming. A typical quilled hat takes me 60-90 hours to complete. After finishing 10 pieces, approximate 600-900 hours, I fell in love with quilling. Today, I design more than just hats. Click here to look at my latest creations, life size wedding cakes.
What is quilling?
Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up a total work of art.
The History of Quilling
The process, which dates back to at least the 13th Century, originated with religious orders who used the gilded edges of old manuscripts to decorate religious artifacts. It is believed the paper was curled around the base of a quill (or feather), hence the name quilling. -North American Quilling Guild
